HOWEVER:

There is a very large number of fake sites (or very often just fake email domains) using "vehicle purchase protection" or "vpp" or variants in their domain name. Those sites of course try to impersonate the (legit) service offered by ebay. Usually the victims will get a mail claiming to come from ebay but in reality coming from such a fake site.

I have been looking on www.buysell.com and have found a surprisingly large number of fruadulant ads. They all want to use ebay for the tranfers. I imagine they send you the real site for you to look at and get comfortable and then have some one send you the fake one for the transfer. Very clever. I have been emailing the ads to see if they are fake or not and every one I emailed (about 10-12) all have came back as a scam. I have noticed that they all have some sort of writing errors in them ( bad grammer, spelling mistakes) as well as mistakes on discriptions, and vehicle specs. It seems that they all claim to have clear titles too. I am finding these little errors to be quite effective on spotting the fruad ads. None of them want to give phone numbers or shipping company names either.

That's exactly how this particular variant of the "fake escrow" scam works, yes.
