New Escrow Fraud?

Postby Snead » Thu Jan 11, 2007 6:39 am

I think I found a fraudulant escrow service: http://www.safevehicletrade.com

I was contacted by cariemoore34@gmail.com to buy a car after I made contact about a car he/she had listed on craigslist.

The "whois" information indicates that the site was registered yesterday (1-9-2007), but the copyright on the bottom of the webpage claims to have been issued in 2001.

Unfortunately, I registered on the site before I got smart and realized that it was probably a fraud :( All they got was my mailing address and my mother's maiden name, I didn't post any funds. Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks,
Snead

BTW - here is the email from cariemoore34@gmail.com:
Hello
I have been promoted at my work and they sent me to
Toronto,Canada,the car is with me.
The car has a clean title it is in very good mechanical and physical condition.
And it is register in U.S.
I have tried to register it here but the fees are to expensive and it isn't a very good deal for me.
So i have decided to sell it to US, I need a very fast and clean sale because I decided to buy another car here and I need to have an amount for the other car soon, this is the reason for the car's price is so low, I want to be sure that I sell it fast.
Being a new employee here,I have to dedicate myself to work and I do not have a lot of time to meet every client, so i decided to use an escrow company and they will take care of the transaction.
If you are interested to buy the car, please register to http://www.safevehicletrade.com and send me your user name so i can start the deal,
for the car to be shipped to you to have it inspected, after both of us agree the terms.
After you register I will tell you everything about the car and about the deal details.
Thank you
Snead

While there is a certain possibility that address and name could be used for identity theft I wouldn't worry too much.

As far as the site itself goes: It will be gone in a couple of hours. Of course it will reappear under a different name soon; but this particular incarnation won't last long.

And as I said:

The site is already dead.

Nope - don't have an image that is usable. Sorry I didn't think to get one while the site was up.

No problem.

The site design was this one: http://escrow-fraud.com/images/sites/Layout35

Now, given the fact that the domain name was registered on the 9th and the site taken down already on the 11th there probably weren't too many victims so far.

Here is the email I received...

Hello, I have been promoted at my work and they sent me to Toronto, Canada, the car is with me.
The car has a clean title it is in very good mechanical and physical condition.
I have tried to register it here but the fees are too expensive and it isn't a very good deal for me, so i have decided to sell it to US, I need a very fast and clean sale because I decided to buy another car here and I need to secure the downpayment for it. this is why the car's price is so low, I want to be sure that I sell it fast.
Being a new employee here,I have to dedicate myself to work and i do not have a lot of time to meet every client, so i decided to use an escrow company, and they will take care of the transaction.
Thank you
Matthew Hines

And a response to my reply..

Don, I have signed up with http://www.generalcarsdeals.com and decided that they should handle the deal for me. I will have the car shipped at your address at my cost for inspection. So if you want to make the deal register at their site and send me the e-mail you have used for registration so I can start the transaction. The car will be driven by one of the company's agents to your address and assist you with the inspection. Also, during the inspection period you have the option to keep the car or return it if you don't like it, and have all your money back. The final price of the car is $3500, shipping included. I'm waiting for your reply.
btw: here's the carfax report of the car:
http://www.carfax.com/viewEmailReport.d ... bDgDaCTSi3

If you could check it out and add it to the list, that would be great!

Thanks! Don
